Founded in 1976 and active in more than 60 countries, Habitat for Humanity International is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that everyone has a decent place to live. Through home construction and repair, policy advocacy, private sector engagement and financial inclusion, it has supported more than 62 million people to improve their housing conditions.

Across many markets where Habitat works, low-income families build and upgrade their homes gradually as resources allow. Yet their progress is often slowed by gaps in the housing system — limited access to appropriate finance, difficulty securing skilled construction support and challenges sourcing safe and affordable materials – which increase long term costs and prolong exposure to inadequate living conditions, even for families who invest steadily in their homes.

Within Habitat, the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter (TCIS) is the global department focused on addressing these underlying market barriers. TCIS acts as an advisor, convener and facilitator within the housing system. Working with and through partners, its programmes expand the flow of capital for home improvements, increase the availability of quality materials and construction services, strengthen consumer information and shape policies that enable affordable, climate resilient housing. This includes Habitat’s MicroBuild® Initiative and MicroBuild Fund 1 — the first global investment vehicle dedicated to housing microfinance – which provide a combination of debt capital and technical assistance to help financial institutions design and scale housing loan products.

Habitat for Humanity has long been a valued partner of e‑MFP, including its key role in the 2017 European Microfinance Award on Housing and its contribution to the book Taking Shelter: Housing Finance for the World’s Poor. We are very pleased to formalise this collaboration through their membership and look forward to working together to advance inclusive housing finance.
