Financing Climate Change Adaptation and Nature-Based Solutions
- Opportunities and Learning from Global Environment Facility

Nowadays, There is growing awareness that 'nature-based solutions' (NbS) can help to protect the planet from climate change impacts while slowing further warming, supporting biodiversity and securing ecosystem services. Jason Spensley, specialist from the Global Environment Facility, shared key lessons learned for the green inclusive sector.

The webinar hosted on 10th June 2021 outlined a suite of opportunities for ambitiously increasing the scale of financing invested in climate change adaptation and transitioning to climate resilient economies. The potential of nature-based solutions was discussed for addressing the climate crises, as well as for driving a climate resilient recovery from the current pandemic. Learning and perspectives were shared through the Global Environment Facility on its role alongside the suite of sources of multilateral finance including the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund, to address the interconnected climate and biodiversity crises with governments, local communities and a range of private sector actors. Examples included the specific case of green inclusive finance projects, explaining the pivotal role it can play in climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation for vulnerable populations, particularly smallholders and rural communities.
